Memorial Day 2021 brings Sarasota a huge holiday as we exchange the lockdowns and masks of our COVID-19 ordeal for picnics, parties, and barbeques.  From the roads and highways to the parks and backyards, the US  is preparing for all types of Memorial Day 2021 outdoor family fun.

This year especially, it seemed to be taking a long time to reach the weekend of May 31, 2021.

Memorial Day has always inspired Americans with the first taste of summer escapes.  It has always been three days that create the first summer holiday and for many of us, it has become a mini-vacation. However, after the restrictions on travel and interaction, we expect to celebrate this year’s Memorial Day with unprecedented joy and vigor.

The Truth about Memorial Day2021:  A Double-Sided Holiday

Memorial Day 2021: Remember Our Fallen Heroes.

Remember and Honor Our Fallen Military Heroes On Memorial Day 2021.

And all these celebrations are wonderful enterprises as we initiate this summer Sarasota spirit of joy for 2021. But we must not neglect the true meaning of the holiday.

We have mentioned the happy side of the holiday. However, Memorial Day 2021 also reflects another side, a historical side for remembrance and honor for our military dead.

Did you know the custom of setting aside Memorial Day to honor our nation’s military dead was originated shortly after the Civil War?  The original purpose of the holiday was not to create a summer celebration.

It was to set aside time to honor members of America’s Armed Forces who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

The Memorial Day Question:  How Can We Honor Soldiers Who Have Given Their Lives to this Country?

Let us find a moment to pause in the Memorial Day celebration of our lives, to recognize their deaths.  We should take a moment to put a flower on a hero’s grave.

Perhaps we can bow our heads as we remember they gave up their lives to keep us free and safe in our American homes.

Our Memorial Day 2021 Message:  More than a Mini-Vacation

Altiora Plastic Surgery & Medspa has decided that a one-day memorial is not enough!  We vow to stay mindful of the grateful spirit of Memorial Day2021  for the entire week, as we drive the busy highways and byways of the United States of America.

At Altiora we want to dedicate more than this weekend to military heroes.  We hereby dedicate this entire week to our military fallen heroes.

In honor of the coming Memorial Day, we quote a very fitting song from Lee Greenwood,

“And I’m proud to be an American,
where at least I know I’m free.
And I won’t forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.”

Terrific Take-Aways for Memorial Day

Don’t Forget To Reapply Sunscreen If You Swim Or Perspire On Memorial Day.

This weekend will bring fun, family, and food, but underneath the festivities, we all know it is really time to remember the heroes who fought for freedom.

Memorial Day is a great day for families and friends to get together.  But it is also a day for giving.  And this day, we give our most reverent and respectful honor to our military fallen heroes.

A Mini-Case Study

Last year we brought you the story of golden-haired Haley, with her translucent skin. Now, we don’t want you to think we are trying to frighten you, but Haley was astonished to discover her beauty mark was diagnosed as a melanoma mole.  She trembled with fear and outrage, “How could she have cancer?”

“But I used sunscreen,” she said tearfully. ”

Sarasota Sunscreen Alert with a Twist

The truth is she did not; she abused her sunscreen… And, you might be doing the same things Memorial Day Weekend.  Now we can see you roll your eyes and say-“Here it comes, another sunscreen blog.”

However, this blog has a twist… We are going to tell you what NOT to do instead of simply what to do.  Thus, you can avoid Haley’s sunscreen mistakes. Be aware of the 5 ways we are seeing people abuse their sunscreen every single Memorial Day.

Use it—Don’t Abuse it–Altiora’s Classic Memorial Day 2021 Warnings against Sunscreen Abuse

1.     Don’t Break the 30 Minute Rule:

Do you know sunscreen takes 30 minutes to activate properly once it is applied to your skin? Don’t wait until it’s “too late” to protect you.

When you put on your swimsuit or cute summer clothes, put on your sunscreen indoors, out of the sun. Do not wait until you have put your towel down on the beach!

Dr. Jeannette Graf, MD, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York says, “You actually want to apply your sunscreen 30 minutes prior to exposure.”

2. No Daydreams During Application!

Sarasota Stylist Say, Don’t Neglect Your Skin Memorial Day.

Please stay alert when you apply your sunscreen.  The beams of the Sarasota summer sun can probe into tiny spots you do not protect.  Then, insidious melanoma can claim some strange places on your skin.

Specialists at Altiora Medspa remind you:  Smoothly cover your toes, side, bottom, back, and top.

Slather the sunscreen onto your underarm area as well as inside each upper arm and do not forget the back of your neck.

By the way, sunscreen for your body is really different than the formula for your face. Apply facial sunscreen all the way up to your hairline, around your ears, and on your eyelids. Plus, lips demand their own high SPF lip balm.

3.  Wear Your Birthday Suit for Application!

Many people are unaware that sunscreen does not work effectively if it is not applied nude. You are not protected if you just slap it up the hems of your clothing. A case in point was Haley in the opening story. Her mole was on the inside upper area of her upper arm, a place that’s easily missed with a swipe of sunscreen.

4. Do not Doze in the Sarasota Sun.

If you must nap, then Set set a skin alarm.  Did you know many true confessions from sunscreen companies claim only 30 minutes of active protection? Some sunscreen is effective for an hour.

Even on overcast days, re-apply it if you are slick with sweat or soaked in water. Note that if you wipe down your sweat, you lose your sunscreen.

A Favorite Component of this Tip.

Have a Designated Driver for your sunscreen bottle wake you for reapplication after no more than 45 minutes.

5.  Do Not Believe that Clouds and Window Tint Are Sun Protection.

They are Not Sunscreen.  If you cruise around under a cloudy sky, the sun can still hurt you here on the Suncoast. Window tint is very limited in its protection. And yes, you should wear sunscreen in the car.  You see, if melanoma or sun damage doesn’t attack you, premature aging will. So make your sunny holiday safe!
