Plastic surgery can come at a high price for those struggling with other everyday family needs. Many patients may seek potentially dangerous unlicensed (so called professionals) to perform procedures in the patient’s home to save costs. This new and dangerous trend is called “do it yourself” cosmetic procedures.  This puts the patient’s safety on a back burner and has recently been reported on by ABC news.

We strongly suggest that patients avoid purchasing chemical peels online. Take the time to visit with a dermatologist, a board certified plastic or cosmetic surgeon to find out all facts before proceeding.

If you attempt this procedure at home, you could experience certain reactions that may not be pleasant. Be very cautious regarding products found online with no mention of using professionals to apply them.

Most of these sites offer a “do it yourself” advertising tag which leads you to believe there is no chance for harm. This is not true. By using these medicines in an incorrect way, you could experience burning, permanent scaring and redness.

We would like to warn patients that this treatment on their own may end up doing harm and the patient could experience long term damage. Procedures such as laser hair removal, chemical peels and microdermabrasion should always be done In a safe setting (in a physician’s office). Unfortunately, prescription-strength chemical peels, microdermabrasion kits, and laser hair removal products can be found online and obtained without a prescription.

Laser hair removal is a procedure to remove both facial and body hair.  The laser stops the hair from growing back quickly.  However, to gain a long lasting effect, the procedure must be done multiple times.  Several treatments are suggested.  Read More from the Mayo Clinic website.

Microdermabrasion can also cause permanent damage as a result of scrubbing the skin too harshly. Over-scrubbing can result in pain and bleeding.  Microdermabrasion offers the patient a non-surgical method to freshen the look of the face.  This method is less aggressive then dermabrasion.  It can treat discoloration of the skin, sun damage and stretch marks by gently sanding the skin.  Read more
