FAQ … Most asked questions regarding reconstruction surgery!

Does the entire breast have to be removed in all cases?

No …Many changes have taken place in the care and treatment of breast cancer patients in recent years. In the past, many patients faced the complete removal of the affected tissue (no matter what size or stage of the tumor was discovered). This called for a complete mastectomy (removal of the breast).

What if the tumor discovered is very small?

If the tumor is small (less than 4 centimeters), it is possible to remove the tumor without removing the entire breast. A lumpectomy is performed and radiation follows. In some cases this is just as effective as an entire mastectomy.  New research is proving this to be true.

What products are available after surgery for breast enhancement?

In the past, when a complete mastectomy was performed, the patient was able to restore beauty and confidence by using breast forms, enhancers and other prosthesis options. This works for many breast cancer survivors.

Will the breast look normal?

Yes …as plastic surgery techniques improved, the patient is now able to have the affected breast (s) restored to normal beauty by having breast reconstruction surgery. This is the preferred method for most patients.

Does Insurance Cover Breast Reconstruction Surgery?

Many insurance plans cover this additional treatment as described by the The Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act (WHCRA) of 1998, a federal law that that requires health insurance companies and self-insured group health plans that cover mastectomies to also provide benefits for mastectomy-related services, including breast reconstruction surgery.
