Do not worry, Lea, our awesome aesthetician will guide you to the correct choice of a peel as she examines the texture and condition of your skin, and discusses your goals for skin improvement and maintenance.

How Chemical Peels Are Done

The proper places for true chemical peels are a cosmetic doctor’s clinic or office. These treatments use serious chemistry, and should not be done in a home setting or the back of a beauty shop.

At Orlando Cosmetic Surgery, our licensed Aesthetician, Lea, possesses over 4 years of experiences in skin rejuvenation, chemical peels and micro-dermabrasion. We have introduced her to you previously in this blog, and we want to remind you that she brings a compassionate sense of healing to her treatments.

As the name of this treatment implies, it involves applying a chemical solution to the skin. “In a sense, this is a wounding that causes some blistering of old or damaged cells, and peels them off.” September To Remember-a special time for skin peels

The glowing new skin under them is soft, smooth and less wrinkled.

The Procedure: A Professional Skin Peel Treatment

1. The first step of your skin peel will be a thorough cleaning of your skin.

2. Then, the chemical application begins. Some Chemical Solutions for skin peels include:

  • glycolic acid,
  • trichloroacetic acid,
  • salicylic acid,
  • lactic acid,
  • or carbolic acid (phenol)

Experts say, “The most commonly-used chemical solutions are: Alphahydroxy acids (AHAs), trichloroacetic acid (TCA), and phenol peels.”

3. The chemical(s) are applied delicately to small areas of your skin at a time.

“It is applied using a sponge, cotton pad or depending on the size of the area, a cotton swab or brush.”

During the application, Lea vigilantly “observes the skin and, based on the changes, determines how long the solution should stay on.”

At the chemical and cellular level, this action creates a controlled wound, and your skin cells react by building new skin cells.

4. There is a burning sensation that lasts about five or ten minutes.

6. Some of our patients briefly need light pain medication during or after a deep peel.

5. This is followed by stinging which can be best eased with cool compresses.

What You Will See After the  Chemical Peel

The look of your skin after the peel depends upon the type of chemical peel you and your aesthetician have chosen. Generally you will see a reaction that looks like sunburn happening after the procedure. There will be some redness “followed by scaling that ends within three to seven days.”

Usually Lea advises her patients to have a mild peel at no sooner than at two weeks intervals.

It is likely that deeper peeling will give you some swelling. The blisters will break, but do not be alarmed.
“They will crust, turn brown, and peel off over a period of seven to 14 days.”
Typically medium-depth peels or deep  peels should only be done in 6-12 month intervals, and only when necessary.

With a very deep peel, you might require bandages “for several days on part or all of the skin that was treated.”

Please return to Part I, and review our sun warnings for the months following a chemical peel. Your new “baby” skin cells will be delicate. Orlando Cosmetic Surgery Med Spa recommends a serious

commitment to the avid use of your sunscreen and avoid sunshine for several months after a chemical peel.

By the way, even if you do not have a chemical peel, we highly recommend daily usage of your sunscreen, anyway–especially here in our Florida sun! Be aware that you might not be able to see it

happen, but fall sun rays can damage your skin in the same manner as summer sun.
