This month, we find onabotulinumtoxinA (OBA), commonly called Botox is in the news again, and this time it has been studied as a treatment for depression. In today’s blog we thought it would be appropriate to let you know a little bit about this amazing study.

We have written previously about the incredible attributes of Botox, and we hope you will re-visit that blog article, if you find this topic as fascinating and timely as we have found it to be.

The new study, published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research, concluded that patients injected with onabotulinumtoxin A (Botox) “demonstrated substantial improvement in their depressive symptoms.”

The research study was randomized, double-blind and placebo-controlled to show the effect of the Botox (OBA)  on depression. The subjects who had been suffering from moderate to severe depression, showed up to a 50% improvement in their symptoms of depression.

The Research Result

Dr. Eric Finzi, MD, PhD and Dr. Norman E. Rosenthal, MD injected 74 depressed subjects “with a single treatment of either onabotulinumtoxinA (OBA) or a placebo to the corrugator and procerus muscles between the eyebrows.”

Symptoms of depression in the OBA treatment group decreased 47 percent after six weeks, but only 21 percent in the placebo group.

The researchers were pleased because this was the first study to illustrate such a significant difference in remission rate with OBA in depressed patients.

“This research is groundbreaking because it offers those who suffer from depression and their doctors an entirely new approach to treating the condition – one that doesn’t conflict with any other treatments,” stated co-author Dr. Norman E. Rosenthal, MD, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Georgetown Medical School.

At Orlando Cosmetic Surgery, we continue to be impressed with the special properties of Botox.

Dr. Eric Finzi has been studying this subject since he was co-author on the paper that first “reported that inhibition of frowning by facial injection of OBA could help depressed patients in a pilot study published in 2006.” He harkened back to that classic research when he stated, “This new research supports earlier facial feedback theory of Charles Darwin and William James, which suggests that facial expressions influence mood.”

In 2010, there was a basic description of these theories expressed in Psychology Today , in which Eva Ritvo, co-author of The Beauty Prescription: The Complete Formula for Looking and Feeling Beautiful, showcased the need for just such a research study.

Of course, Orlando Cosmetic Surgery hopes that more such studies will showcase the value of the abundant capabilities of beautiful, bountiful, Botox treatments.
