Even as our families anticipate Father’s Day, Orlando Cosmetic Surgery Med Spa reminds you that we are beginning skin cancer season with its beautiful but damaging Florida sunshine.

The rays of the sun will cause 76,380 new melanomas, and you probably know that melanoma is the most deadly form of skin cancer.

What you might not understand is that 46,870 men will be diagnosed, as opposed to only 29,510 women.  It does not seem fair, does it?

The truth is, “Men, especially those with lighter skin, are more likely than anybody else to get skin cancer including melanoma—the deadliest kind of skin cancer.”

Four Reasons Men Are More Likely Than Women to Get Skin Cancer

Reason 1–The harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun are impossible to avoid if a man does ordinary our-door activities.

Reason 2–Men bike, walk, work and mow the lawn.  Their UV exposure adds up over time.  Their favorite work as well as leisure seems to take place out of doors.  Thus they have an increased risk of getting skin cancer. Men simply spend more time outside than women and they tend to collect more sun exposure than women.

Reason 3–In our society, it is customary for women to wear moisturizer and makeup on their skin.  Men do not have this custom.  So, they miss out of the protection of products that are infused with sunscreen and protect women from the harmful rays of the sun.  “When outside on a sunny day for more than an hour, only about 14% of men use sunscreen on both their face and other exposed skin.”

Reason 4–Studies have shown that men’s skin is more sensitive to the sun.  Tatiana M. Oberyszyn, PhD, assistant professor of pathology at Ohio State University in Columbus stated, “In addition to sunscreen, maybe men need to pay more attention to their skin than women do.  It is not a cosmetic thing;  it really is a health issue.”

Orlando Cosmetic Surgery recognizes that this week is men’s health week, and Orlando Cosmetic Surgery is focused on saving men’s skin this summer.  Part of that commitment is a simple suggestion that you provide at least one man you love with sunscreen, the perfect Father’s Day Gift.

He can be your dad or the father of your children, but whoever he is, that special man in your life needs the protection of a good sunscreen.
